The challenge posed was to integrate a new 200-bed Nursing Home with an existing Church on the same compound. Removing the social stigma of a nursing home for the elderly as a gloomy institution, the design aimed to bring together the two seemingly distinctive communities sensitively within a calm and peaceful environment.
The hillock site allowed for the creation of an elevated central platform on grade with the existing chapel. The Sanctuary Deck is the common unifying space for both the Church and the Nursing Home. It is the biggest green space on the site which can facilitate congregational activities of both the church and the nursing home. Other green open spaces are the roof top garden and the church sunken court.
The building frontage of the Nursing Home is set away, respecting the view towards the Sanctuary.
